Individual Idea

Dark Paradise

My plot follows the life of a young, eight year old boy named Harry, who comes from a dysfunctional family of an alcoholic, abusive father and a depressed, suicidal mother.

Harry is exploring a forest close to his home. He enjoys exploring this forest as it takes his mind away from the bad experiences he faces at home. He stumbles down a trail he has never walked down before and finds a mysterious hole in the ground. He tries to look into the hole for a bottom, and even drops a stone down it but no sound of the stone hitting the ground is heard. He holds onto a nearby tree and attempts to step down into the hole but the branch snaps and he plummets into the darkness.

He finds himself in a completely different world, full of vivid colours and strange landscapes that stretch out as far as the eye can see. Oceans of purple water and skies of green fill his eyes as he marvels at the amazing beauty that stands in front of him. The world is odd and strange, perhaps unsettling to say the least, yet this world seems such a better comparison to the one he previously knew. There is a hole in the floor that takes him back to his own world and the film follows his story, showing contrast between the horrible life that the 'real world' offers to him, while the 'other world' brings happiness and excitement to him. It is also discovered that death is not something that occurs in this world. The contrast part of the film doesn't span an extremely large amount of time as this is not a fantasy film but rather a horror film, which is when the psychological part starts.

A situation gets out of hand at home, Harry is getting beaten by his dad while his mother watches silently, pretending that everything is fine. Harry gets a chance to run, and as he does so, his dad chases him. He runs to the hole that leads to the other world, and the Dad follows him down the hole without thinking twice.

Harry wakes up in the other world after passing out during the travel between the worlds. The skies are made of fire, the world is now a terrifying hellscape full of horrific creatures. The movie then becomes psychological. as the boy searches for a way out of this hell, while slowly going insane. Character development is a key aspect in this film and shows the deterioration of the eight year old's mental health, as he faces his worst fears.

At the end of the movie, the boy finds his father chained up by a pack of small demonic creatures as he is slowly having his internal organs removed and eaten. Death doesn't seem to have an effect in this world, yet death seems to be the one thing anyone in this world could wish for. This scene will really show the character development of Harry, as he walks off from this situation to the sound of his dad's agonizing screams, as he smiles in a 'gone mad' kind of style. The movie ends with the boy burning himself alive, only to finish with a shot of his ashes with the implication that, due to death not existing in this world, he is still alive even like that.
